Ultra-processed foods are everywhere….but are they in our brownies?
You may think as a small artisan bakery that hand makes everything that we don’t use any UPF in our products but this actually isn’t the case. As you are possibly becoming more aware of, UPF are everywhere. The lovely Belgian chocolate we use contains emulsifiers (soy lecithin) and vanilla flavouring, the gluten-free flour contains xanthan gum, the caramel contains glucose syrup and so on…you get the picture.
It’s something I am very aware of in my family’s diet and I actively aim to minimise how much UPF we eat, however I also don’t see myself giving up the occasional bag of Doritos or, of course, a slice of yummy brownie here and there! Turning down a piece of cake at a party definitely isn’t my style, but I might make a cake slightly differently at home now!
It’s a very interesting (and quite scary) subject to learn about and it’s amazing how many changes I’ve been able to make by just comparing ingredient lists in supermarkets a bit more thoroughly.
Even though I can’t see us, as a commercial bakery, being able to remove UPF for a long time (unless there are some major changes within the large ingredient manufacturers), I do still like to give choice and offer options for as many dietary requirements and lifestyles as possible.
We have been working on a really delicious UPF-free brownie, starting with just a basic chocolatey brownie and hoping to add some other options in the future if it proves popular!
This is by no means a “healthy option”, it’s a beautifully rich and buttery brownie, still a treat like all of our products!
So if you’re looking for a UPF-free gift delivered to your friend or a UPF-free cake for yourself to enjoy, why not give our new UPF-free brownie a go!
